CA Childcare Background Checks & Fingerprinting: What You Need to Know
If you're planning to become a licensed childcare provider in California, one of the most important steps in the licensing process is completing your required background checks and fingerprinting.

Why are background checks required?
California requires background checks to help ensure the safety and well-being of children in licensed childcare settings.
Most individuals who will own, operate, work in, or regularly be present at a licensed childcare facility must complete a criminal background check before they can be cleared by Community Care Licensing.
How do I complete my fingerprinting?
California uses the Live Scan fingerprinting system. (Click here for locations near you)
After beginning your licensing process, you'll receive the appropriate Live Scan request forms from Community Care Licensing or as part of your licensing application.
Take your completed form and a valid photo ID to an authorized Live Scan fingerprinting location. A technician will electronically capture your fingerprints and submit them directly to the appropriate state agencies for processing.
Where can I get Live Scan fingerprints?
Live Scan services are available throughout California at many locations, including:
UPS Stores
Postal and shipping centers
Private fingerprinting businesses
Some police departments
Sheriff's offices
Other authorized Live Scan providers
Appointments are recommended at many locations.
Who needs fingerprint clearance?
Depending on your childcare setting, fingerprint clearance may be required for:
License applicants
Childcare employees
Adult residents of a Family Child Care Home
Volunteers or individuals with regular contact with children, when required by licensing regulations
Community Care Licensing will determine who must obtain clearance based on your specific situation.
How long does it take?
Processing times vary depending on the individual case and state processing workloads. Many applicants receive clearance within a few days, while others may take longer if additional review is required. Submitting your fingerprints early can help prevent unnecessary delays in your licensing process.
